Sri Lanka vs Maldives.
Both are Indian Ocean islands with warm water, but the two surf trips have almost nothing else in common. Sri Lanka is a large island with beaches, towns and learner waves. The Maldives is a chain of coral atolls where the waves break on shallow reef and getting to them is part of the planning. This comparison uses the Weligama, Arugam Bay and North Malé Atoll guides and the Maldives hub.
Choose Sri Lanka for learning, long stays and a varied trip on a modest budget. Choose the Maldives only if you are an intermediate or advanced surfer who wants world-class reef waves in warm blue water, and accept that access means a boat, a resort or a charter. Beginners should pick Sri Lanka without hesitation.

Who each destination is for
The North Malé Atoll guide describes breaks such as Cokes, Chickens and Jailbreaks, most of them reef waves rated intermediate to advanced. The FAQ states that most waves break over shallow coral and suit intermediate and advanced surfers, with lessons offered only on smaller days at some guesthouses and resorts.
Sri Lanka's guides describe Weligama Bay as one of the best places in Asia to learn to surf, with a soft sandy bay, plus Mirissa and Midigama reefs for improvers and Arugam Bay's points for a wider range. If you cannot yet duck-dive or paddle out through whitewater reliably, the Maldives is the wrong first trip.
Seasons: Sri Lanka and Maldives
The Maldives runs from about March to October, with June to August bringing the biggest swells and March to May and September to October offering lighter winds, according to the hub. Sri Lanka has two seasons on two coasts: November to April on the south coast and April or May to October on the east.
If you can only travel in December to February, Sri Lanka's south coast is in season and the Maldives is on the quiet side. If you travel in July, both can work, but the Maldives will be at its biggest and windiest.
Access, boats and where you stay
In the Maldives the guide says a speedboat or public ferry from Velana International Airport and Malé takes around half an hour to an hour to reach Thulusdhoo. You can stay in local guesthouses, surf resorts or on charter boats. Each model has different costs and access: guesthouses are the cheapest, resorts are the most comfortable and charters reach the most waves.
Sri Lanka's waves are mostly reached by road, tuk-tuk or scooter from a village base, and the south coast transfer from Colombo takes hours. The infrastructure is easy and flexible, and you can change hotels without any boat logistics.
Cost and value: Sri Lanka and Maldives
Neither destination is a budget one in every setting, but Sri Lanka usually offers more low-cost options: guesthouses, local food and tuk-tuks. The Maldives can be expensive, particularly resorts and charters, though the hub notes that guesthouses on local islands offer more affordable stays near quality breaks. Check current prices and package inclusions.
In both places, compare what the price includes: transfers, food, boat trips and boards. Read cancellation terms carefully on charters and resort packages, and check who holds the deposit.
Safety and etiquette
Maldivian reefs are shallow and coral cuts are common. Crowd control matters, because line-ups are small and managed by local rules and resort systems. Follow the guides on etiquette and ask boat operators about safety. Sri Lanka's reefs and rips also demand care, and the point breaks of Arugam Bay can get crowded in the season.
Both countries have local customs, and the Maldives is a Muslim country with specific rules on alcohol and dress outside resorts. Check official travel advice and entry rules before booking.
Monsoon and coral: the drawbacks
Sri Lanka's downsides are the monsoon pattern, which means you must pick the right coast, long transfers between coasts and busy line-ups in season at Weligama and Arugam Bay. Reefs and rips need care.
The Maldives' downsides are cost, shallow coral that makes falls risky and limited waves for beginners. Access depends on boats and resort or charter rules, and the season's windiest months can limit sessions. Neither is a quick, cheap weekend; plan around the season and the level you actually have.
Matching month to coast and atoll
Before booking, match the month to the coast: November to April for Sri Lanka's south, April or May to October for the east, and March to October for the Maldives. Ask about group size, boat transfers and what is included in any resort or charter, and check who holds your deposit and what the refund terms are. Carry reef booties, a rash vest, a first-aid kit and insurance that covers surfing and boat travel.
