How the ranking works
Each destination's score mixes how often the open ocean near it sits in a size range that suits your level (ERA5 data, 2015–2024), whether the month falls in our editorial season, and how well the place fits your budget and needs. Offshore swell is not surf at the beach: a sheltered bay can be perfect for beginners when the open ocean is big. Budget figures and the 0–3 scores behind wifi, rentals and crowds are our estimates.
