Ericeira vs Peniche.
Ericeira and Peniche are Portugal's two best-known surf bases north of Lisbon, and many travellers choose between them. Both are fishing towns. Ericeira is a World Surfing Reserve with a coast of reefs and points; Peniche is a peninsula with beaches facing different ways. The comparison uses the two destination guides and public sources.
Choose Peniche if you want reliability and choice: beaches facing three directions mean a workable wave most days, and beginners and intermediates are well served. Choose Ericeira if you are an intermediate or advanced surfer who wants reef and point breaks and a pretty town, and be ready to choose carefully on learning days. Beginners lean Peniche; reef lovers lean Ericeira.

The coast and how it works
The Ericeira guide describes a whitewashed fishing town above a coastline of reefs and points, recognised as a World Surfing Reserve, and close enough to Lisbon to fit a surf trip around a city break. Its best waves, such as Coxos and Ribeira d'Ilhas, are reef and point breaks rated intermediate to advanced.
The Peniche guide explains that the old town sits on a rocky headland that was once an island, with beaches facing north-west, west and south within a short drive. When wind or swell is wrong on one side, a sheltered option often exists on the other. That geography is the whole story, and it means schools can usually find somewhere workable.
Learning to surf: Ericeira and Peniche
In Ericeira beginners should learn at Foz do Lizandro or another sheltered beach chosen on the day, not on the famous reefs, according to the guide. Advanced waves such as Coxos are not suitable for learners.
Peniche is easier for beginners. The guide says schools can find sheltered, smaller waves, most often around the bay at Baleal, and advises avoiding Supertubos and the reefs until you can catch and control unbroken waves. For a first week, Peniche usually offers more options and a more flexible plan.
Seasons and water
Both guides give September to November as the best all-round window, with consistent groundswell, relatively mild water and fewer crowds. Winter is powerful and cold, and summer is usually small, suiting beginners.
The wetsuit advice is similar: the Peniche guide says most visitors use a 4/3, with a 5/4 and boots in winter. Ericeira's guide recommends a 4/3 or 5/4 in winter.
Crowds and character
Peniche has many schools, camps, rental shops and surf houses, which brings choice but crowds, especially in summer weekends and at the best-known peaks. Supertubos is a fast, hollow beach break that is crowded and heavy, and it hosts the Championship Tour stop in October according to the 2026 WSL calendar.
Ericeira feels more like a village, with a compact old town, restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere, but its reefs also draw crowds when the swell is good. For a quieter evening and a prettier centre, many people prefer Ericeira. For a place that is all about surf infrastructure, Peniche leads.
Getting there and the trip
Both are within about a short drive of Lisbon, and either can be combined with a city break. Car hire is useful, particularly for Peniche's different beaches and Ericeira's scattered reefs. Check the travel notes in each guide.
Off the water, Peniche offers the Berlengas islands and a fortress, and Ericeira offers a walk-through old town. Both suit mixed groups, with Ericeira slightly more suited to couples and Peniche to families and large groups.
Drawbacks of each town
Ericeira's downsides are fewer beginner waves and a reef coast that punishes mistakes. The guide notes reef-heavy conditions and tells learners to avoid the famous breaks. Parking in summer and crowds on good days can frustrate.
Peniche's downsides are crowds and, on big days, the number of closed-out beaches. The guide warns that Supertubos is a crowded, heavy wave, and summer weekends are busy. The abundance of schools and camps means quality varies, so check reviews and certifications before booking. Both towns are best out of the school-holiday peaks.
Splitting a week between the two
The two are close enough that some visitors split a week between them: a few days on Peniche's beaches, then Ericeira's reefs when conditions suit. A car makes this easy. Check swell direction and wind in the forecast, and move to the side of the coast that works. The Lisbon airport serves both, and a city day fits either end of the trip.
Preparing for a Lisbon-coast week
Before booking, check the forecast and tide, and be willing to move between the two coasts if needed. Book a school with a clear ratio and a plan for choosing the beach each day, particularly in summer. Carry a 4/3 for most of the year and boots in winter. If you fly with a board, check the airline's rules, or rent locally, where rental is easy in both towns. Book summer weekends early, as accommodation fills.
