Bali vs Lombok.
Bali and Lombok share a season and a country, but they feel very different. Bali is the established surf island; Lombok, a short hop east, offers quieter bays and reef waves reached by boat. This comparison uses the Canggu, Uluwatu and Kuta Lombok guides and public sources.
Choose Bali for choice, convenience and a deep surf scene; choose Lombok for quieter bays, boat-access reefs and a slower pace, accepting less infrastructure. Beginners can learn in both, at Canggu or at Selong Belanak, while experts get world-famous reefs on Bali's Bukit and Desert Point on Lombok.

Same season, different crowds
Both islands run on the same dry-season pattern, roughly April to October, with June to August as the peak. The Kuta Lombok guide says April, May, September and October are often less crowded, which applies in Bali too.
Bali's line-ups are crowded, especially Batu Bolong and the Bukit reefs. Lombok has more space, though the guide notes that development is changing the coast fast. Expect fewer people at Gerupuk and Selong Belanak than at Canggu.
Wave types: Bali and Lombok
Bali's menu runs from beach breaks to powerful reefs. Canggu has sand-and-rock breaks for learners and reef at Echo Beach. The Bukit has Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin and Impossibles, for advanced surfers.
Lombok has Gerupuk Bay, which the guide describes as five waves reached by boat, plus Selong Belanak, a sandy bay for beginners. Mawi and Ekas are powerful reefs, and Desert Point is an expert-only left-hand reef. Lombok suits surfers who like reef and boat trips; Bali suits those who want variety on land.
Learning to surf: Bali and Lombok
Bali's schools cluster in Canggu and Kuta, with a lot of choice and sometimes crowded water. Lombok has schools at Selong Belanak and Gerupuk Inside, where reefs are sheltered and gentle on small days.
Lombok gives a quieter learning environment but fewer facilities. Bali gives more choice but busier water. A beginner on a short trip may prefer Bali for convenience; a learner with a week to spare might enjoy Lombok.
Getting around
Bali has Denpasar airport, a dense network of drivers and scooters, and heavy traffic. The Bukit and Canggu are far apart, and moving between them takes time.
Lombok's airport is smaller, and the south coast is reached by road. The Kuta Lombok guide covers flights and scooters. Boat access is common at Gerupuk, and boatmen set prices, so agree them in advance. Roads are generally quieter than Bali's.
Atmosphere and off-water time
Bali offers restaurants, nightlife, spas and yoga on a large scale. Lombok is slower, with beach bars and cultural experiences, plus Rinjani, the Gili Islands and local Sasak culture. The Kuta Lombok guide advises respect for local etiquette. For non-surfers, Bali has more to do; for people who want quiet, Lombok wins.
Where Bali and Lombok let you down
Bali's downsides are well known. Traffic in Canggu and on the Bukit can turn a short trip into an hour, the best reefs are crowded and unforgiving of mistakes, and mass tourism has changed the atmosphere in the busiest areas. The Uluwatu guide stresses that the reefs are shallow and for experienced surfers, and that respect for the temple and the local community matters.
Lombok's downsides are different. Facilities are thinner, boats and boatmen need negotiating, medical access is limited compared with Bali, and the coast is changing quickly as development arrives. Desert Point is an expert-only left, and the guide's warnings about boat prices and waiting times are worth heeding. Neither island suits a traveller who wants everything to run to a timetable.
Splitting a fortnight across the two islands
On a two-week trip, many surfers spend a week on each island: the first on Bali for variety and recovery from jet lag, then Lombok for quieter reefs and boats. A flight between the islands is short, and ferries also run, though they take longer. On a one-week trip, choose one island to avoid losing days in transit.
If your priority is learning, base yourself at Canggu or Kuta for convenience, or at Selong Belanak for a quieter bay. If your priority is reef surfing, Uluwatu or Gerupuk and Ekas are the natural choices. Always check the season: both islands are best in the dry season, and swells are smaller in the wet months.
Messages to send before a Lombok trip
Before you book, decide how much you value convenience against space. Bali rewards a week of planning less, because almost everything can be arranged on arrival, while Lombok benefits from a few messages ahead about boats, boards and transfers. Check which month you travel: April, May, September and October offer a better balance of swell and crowds than July and August on both islands. Take reef booties, a rash vest and a spare leash, and carry travel insurance that covers surfing and scooters if you plan to ride one.
Questions
Is Lombok less crowded than Bali?
Generally yes, though the Kuta Lombok guide notes development is changing the coast quickly.
Can I combine Bali and Lombok?
Yes, by flight or ferry. Many travellers combine them in one trip, but check the time needed.
Which is better for beginners?
Both work. Bali has more schools; Lombok offers quieter beaches such as Selong Belanak.
Do I need a boat in Lombok?
For Gerupuk's outer reefs, yes. Boatmen take surfers from the village. Agree price and waiting time first.
