The breaks
Recognised, publicly known surf spots around Da Nang. Suitability depends on the day's swell, wind and tide, so treat the level as a guide, not a guarantee.
| Break | Type | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| My Khe Beach | Beach break | Beginner–Intermediate | The main surf beach, with rentals and schools on the sand. Best with a north-east swell and westerly wind, typically three to six feet at its best. |
| Non Nuoc Beach | Beach break | Beginner–Intermediate | A quieter beach south of My Khe that picks up a little more north-east swell. Fewer facilities, so bring what you need. |
| Other My Khe sections | Beach break | Beginner | Other stretches of the same long urban beach are used on some days. We could not verify wave quality here, so ask a local school which section is working and stay clear of swimmers. |
| Son Tra peninsula beaches | Beach/rock break | Intermediate | Bays on the headland that locals may use when the main beach is blown out. We could not verify wave quality or access, so treat this as a question for a local school. |

A city on the South China Sea
Da Nang sits on the central coast of Vietnam, on the South China Sea, with mountains to the west and the Han River running through the city. It is about 764 kilometres south of Hanoi and 964 kilometres north of Ho Chi Minh City. The airport is within the city itself, which makes arrivals easy.
The city has grown fast, and its seafront is lined with hotels, restaurants and apartment blocks. Sights nearby include the Marble Mountains, the Son Tra peninsula with its forest and coastal views, and the old port town of Hoi An, which is administratively part of Da Nang. The Hai Van Pass, between Da Nang and Hue, is one of the country's best-known road routes, now bypassed by a 6.28-kilometre tunnel that opened in 2005.
This is a place where the surf is part of a wider holiday, not the reason for the trip. That framing is useful when you set your expectations.
My Khe and Non Nuoc
My Khe is the main stretch of beach used by surfers, an exposed beach break that is generally considered friendly for beginners. Surf schools and rental stands operate on the sand during the season. Typical wave sizes quoted by the national tourism site are about three to six feet during the best weeks, although many days are smaller.
Best conditions are reported when a north-east swell combines with a westerly offshore wind. That combination is not constant, so expect a mix of clean mornings and choppy afternoons. On the biggest days, there are rip currents to watch for.
Non Nuoc, a few kilometres south, is quieter and tends to pick up slightly more north-east swell than My Khe. Some sources rate it better for waves in the September and October period. It has less infrastructure, so surfers who want rental or lessons usually start at My Khe.
The surf season, and the storms that come with it
Surf sources give a season of roughly September to March, with late September to November often cited as the peak. Surf-Forecast names October as the most reliable month for clean, rideable waves. Swell can arrive at any time within that broad window, driven by the north-east monsoon.
The same period overlaps with the wet and typhoon season. Wikipedia describes the typhoon and wet season in Da Nang as running from September to December, with a dry season from January to August. Short, intense tropical showers do not usually stop surfing, but typhoons can close beaches, cancel flights and make the sea dangerous. In October and November, check the forecast before you travel and follow local warnings.
From April to August, the sea is generally flat to tiny, and Da Nang is a beach holiday destination. If you are travelling then, treat surf as a possible bonus, not the plan.
Getting to and around Da Nang
Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is in the city centre, with flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and international routes in the region. The beach is a short ride from the airport, usually 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic, and taxis and ride-hailing apps are common.
Hoi An, the historic port town known for its old streets and lantern-lit evenings, is a short drive south. Hue, the former imperial capital, is a longer trip to the north. Both make good days out when the waves are small.
A scooter is the usual way to move around Vietnam's cities, but traffic is intense and accidents involving visitors are common. If you ride, wear a helmet, check your insurance covers it and make sure you have the correct licence for Vietnam.
Where to base yourself
The beachfront near My Khe is the obvious choice for surfers. Hotels and apartments of all price levels cluster along the main coastal road and the lanes behind it, with cafes, bars and surf shops nearby. Internet quality varies by building, so check before booking if you plan to work.
Streets a few blocks inland from the beach offer a wider choice of apartments and eateries. Son Tra peninsula is quieter and greener, though farther from the waves. Hoi An is a charming base but about half an hour away, which makes early surf sessions harder.
Prices vary with the season, and the period around Tet, the lunar new year in late January or February, is the busiest and most expensive time on the Vietnamese coast. Book early if you want to be here then.
Water safety and etiquette
Rip currents are the main hazard at My Khe in bigger swell. Check where lifeguards or flags are placed, avoid swimming between surfers and ask your school or hotel about local conditions. Strong swell can also drive floating debris and cause low visibility.
Vietnam's surf scene is relatively young, with a mix of local and visiting surfers, and a casual, friendly atmosphere in the line-up. Etiquette is the same as elsewhere: the surfer closest to the peak has priority, beginners should stay away from the main take-off and everyone should keep control of their board.
Sun protection, a rash vest and plenty of water are worth packing. The water is warm for much of the season, but it can cool during the winter months, and a thin wetsuit top is comfortable on windy days.
Beyond Da Nang: other surf on Vietnam's coast
If Da Nang is too flat or too stormy, other parts of the coast pick up waves at slightly different times. The national tourism site names Mui Ne as a surf area from November to March, Vung Tau as a beginner-friendly option, and Phan Rang as a spot with more power and suited to intermediate or advanced surfers.
Nha Trang's season is described inconsistently, so if you plan to go there, check with a local school. Distances between these places are large, so a coast-hopping surf trip requires flights or long road or train journeys.
For most visitors, one base is enough. Da Nang works well from September through to the new year, and it combines surf with food, history and easy transport.
Da Nang surf season month by month
A broad planning picture, not a forecast. Swell, wind and water temperature vary from year to year.
| January | Winter swell still possible, with cooler air and sea. The dry season starts and waves can be clean, though many days are small. |
|---|---|
| February | Tet often falls in late January or February, bringing crowds and higher prices. Swell is variable and cooler weather is possible. |
| March | The tail end of the season. Waves are smaller and more sporadic, with warming weather and calmer seas. |
| April | Mostly flat. The beach is pleasant for swimming and sunbathing, and surf is a minor bonus when it appears. |
| May | Hot, dry and generally flat. Lessons are limited and the beach is busy with domestic holidaymakers. |
| June | Summer heat. The sea is calm and the surf season has ended, so the city is more attractive for beach holidays than waves. |
| July | Hot and flat for surf. The beach is busy with visitors, particularly during school holidays. |
| August | Still flat in most years, with the first signs of the changing season late in the month. |
| September | The season begins. Typhoon and wet-season risk starts, and swell can arrive from late September. |
| October | Often the most reliable month for clean, rideable waves according to Surf-Forecast, but typhoon risk is real. |
| November | Regular north-east swell and a good month for surf, with rain and storm risk. Check forecasts closely. |
| December | Swell continues and rain can ease later in the month. Cooler weather means a thin wetsuit top may be useful. |
Learning to surf in Da Nang
My Khe has schools and rentals on the beach during the surf season, and the sandy bottom makes it a reasonable place for beginners. Typically, lessons start with a short beach briefing and move to waist-deep water with soft boards.
Because the waves are seasonal, check that lessons are running when you visit. Between April and August the beach is often flat, and some schools shut or switch to other activities. In the typhoon months, ask about the school's cancellation policy and how it manages safety.
Choose an instructor who talks about rip currents and who will not send you out in poor conditions. Group size and equipment matter as much as price. If you want to continue after a few lessons, plan a second trip in the September to March window.
