A small island across the strait from Bali

Nusa Lembongan is one of three Nusa Islands, together with Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan, in the Klungkung Regency south-east of Bali. It is about 12 kilometres from the Bali coast across the Badung Strait, covers roughly eight square kilometres and has a permanent population of around 5,000 people.

The island is a small tourist hub in its own right. It has the largest share of the district's visitor infrastructure and is a popular stop for visitors from both Bali and Lombok. Most people get around on scooters or on foot. A suspension bridge to Nusa Ceningan opened in 2017 after an earlier wooden bridge collapsed in 2016 during a religious procession, killing eight people.

Seaweed farming was long part of the local economy, although Wikipedia notes it stopped being viable around 2015 and was rebuilt in 2020–2021. Mangroves cover roughly 212 hectares on the north-eastern side. For surfers, the point is that this is a working island with a growing tourism sector, not an empty one.

Shipwrecks, Lacerations and Playgrounds

The island's main waves break along the north-west coast, near the Lembongan Bay area. Shipwrecks is a left-hand reef wave near an old wreck; sources disagree on its level, with one calling it for experienced surfers only and another rating it as intermediate. Tide preferences also vary from site to site, with some saying low tide and others high, so check locally.

Lacerations, a short walk or paddle away, is a hollow, shallow reef wave. Guides describe it as a mid-tide break that becomes dangerous at full low tide. The name is a reminder of what happens when you fall in the wrong place, and it is best for intermediate to advanced surfers.

Playgrounds is the gentlest of the three. Sources describe it as working across a range of tides, best at mid-tide pushing high, and suitable for confident beginners or improving surfers on smaller days. Even so, the reef is shallow and sharp, and bigger swells make it more demanding.

Reading the reef: tide, swell and wind

All the breaks are reef breaks, so tide matters more than at a beach. Guides broadly agree that mid-to-high tides are friendlier, while very low water exposes sharp coral and makes the waves hollow. Sources disagree on specifics at individual breaks, so use local advice and a current tide chart.

The season most commonly quoted runs from April to September, when southern hemisphere swells reach the island and the prevailing winds suit the north-west coast. Outside those months the wet season is less consistent, although the island can still pick up waves.

Because the three breaks sit close together, you can often choose between them based on size and tide. As a rule, start with the mellowest option, watch from the beach or a boat first and move up only if you are comfortable.

Getting to Nusa Lembongan from Denpasar

The usual route is a fast boat from Sanur, on Bali's east coast, which takes about 30 minutes. Cargo boats also run from Padang Bai, but these are slower and less comfortable. Sanur is a short drive from Bali's Ngurah Rai airport, so it is realistic to land and be on the island the same day, subject to boat timetables and sea conditions.

Boat services are weather-dependent, and rough seas can cancel crossings, especially in bigger swells. Allow a buffer day before an international flight home. Boats may not carry large boards in the same way as a car, so check your operator's board policy before you go.

Surf spots themselves are reached by walking, paddling or short boat rides, depending on the tide. Do not assume that you can walk to the reef at low tide; ask locally.

Where to base yourself on the island

Accommodation is spread along the north and north-west of the island, from beachfront bungalows to modern resorts. Choose a base close to the surf if you want early sessions, and keep in mind that the island is small enough that most places are within a short scooter ride.

Food ranges from local warungs to western-style cafés. Wifi is available at many places, although speeds vary, and the island is a pleasant place to spend a few days rather than a long remote stay. It works well as a stop within a Bali trip.

Beyond surfing, the island and its neighbours are known for coral reef snorkelling and diving. The waters around the Nusa Islands are reported to hold at least 247 coral species and 562 reef fish species. Currents can be strong, so use a reputable operator.

Hazards on a coral-reef island

Shallow coral is the main risk. Cuts can become infected quickly, so clean wounds properly and take them seriously. Reef shoes can help when paddling at low tide, and a helmet is not unreasonable for Lacerations on small days.

Currents run through the channel between the islands, and they can pull a surfer or swimmer away from where they intend to be. Paddle out with a plan and know how you will get back in.

Boats move through the surf zone, taking surfers, divers and tourists, so keep an eye out for them and expect to share the water. Be respectful of local people who work on these boats and who live nearby.

Planning a short surf trip from Bali

Nusa Lembongan works well as a two-to-four night add-on. If you are staying on the Bukit peninsula, Sanur is about a drive away, and you can combine the crossing with a break from the busier parts of Bali.

To use the time well, check the forecast before you cross and keep a day free either side for rough sea. Pack enough equipment for the full stay, including spare fins and a leash, since replacements are harder to find than in Bali's main surf towns.

If the swell is too big or too small, the diving, snorkelling and mangrove tours offer a reasonable alternative, though conditions and safety standards vary between operators.

Nusa Lembongan surf season month by month

A broad planning picture, not a forecast. Swell, wind and water temperature vary from year to year.

JanuaryWet season, with rain and a rougher crossing. Waves are patchy and the reefs are less reliable, so this is a month for flexibility.
FebruaryStill wet and changeable. Boats can be cancelled in rough seas and surf is unreliable.
MarchConditions begin to settle. Swell is still inconsistent, though the weather is gradually improving.
AprilThe start of the commonly quoted season. Swell becomes more regular and the reefs begin to work.
MayA good month, with dry-season swell and fewer visitors than July and August.
JuneConsistent swell and typically favourable winds, with visitor numbers building across the island.
JulyPeak season for both waves and visitors. Expect crowds at the three main breaks and busy boats.
AugustSimilar to July. Larger swells make Lacerations and Shipwrecks heavy, so choose your wave with care.
SeptemberStill within the season, with decent swell and slightly thinner crowds than the middle of the dry season.
OctoberA transition month. Waves can still be good but the weather is less settled, and some days will blow out.
NovemberThe wet season begins. Surf is less consistent and the crossing can be rough.
DecemberWet and busy with holiday visitors on the island. Surf is unreliable and the reefs are less friendly.

Learning to surf on Nusa Lembongan

The reefs here are shallow and sharp, which makes Lembongan a poor first choice for a complete beginner. Playgrounds is the gentlest wave and is sometimes used for lessons on small days, but it is still a coral reef.

If you are new to surfing, learn on a sandy beach on mainland Bali first and visit the island once you can paddle into green waves and control your board. Intermediate surfers who want to try a reef for the first time can use Playgrounds at mid-to-high tide with a local guide.

If you do book lessons or a guided session, ask about the instructor's local knowledge, group size, and how they handle tide and boat traffic.

Nusa Lembongan surf trip questions

How do you get to Nusa Lembongan from Bali?

Fast boats run from Sanur and take about 30 minutes. Slower cargo boats run from Padang Bai. Sanur is a short drive from Denpasar airport. Services depend on the sea, so allow a spare day before any flight home.

When is the best time to surf in Nusa Lembongan?

April to September is the most commonly quoted season, when southern hemisphere swells reach the north-west coast. The wet season is less consistent and boat crossings can be rougher.

Is Nusa Lembongan good for beginners?

Not for complete beginners. All the main waves are shallow coral reefs. Playgrounds is the most forgiving and can work on small days at mid-to-high tide, but learners are better off on a sandy beach in mainland Bali first.

What are the main dangers when surfing at Nusa Lembongan?

Shallow, sharp coral, particularly at low tide, and currents in the channel. Boat traffic in the surf zone is another hazard. Clean any cut thoroughly and use a tide chart before paddling out.

Can you do a day trip to Lembongan to surf?

It is possible, but the boat timetables and tide windows make it tight. Staying at least one night gives you time for the best conditions and avoids rushing the crossing.
