Raglan.

Black sand, green hills and a town that encourages you to stay a little longer. Raglan is about reading the coastline as much as chasing its famous lefts.

Find your kind of wave

Manu Bay is part of Raglan’s point-break reputation. Learners have a different starting point: local schools use Ngarunui Beach when conditions are suitable. Rocky entries and established lineups deserve observation and guidance; do not equate a long ride with an easy wave.

When to go

Autumn offers a useful travel compromise for a surf-focused road trip, with cooler conditions than summer. It is an editorial planning window, not an exclusive season. Tasman Sea weather changes quickly, so keep wind and swell forecasts central to the daily plan.

Choose your base

Choose a town base for cafés and everyday convenience, or a coastal base if you are happy arranging trips for supplies. Confirm transport between your stay and the surf; the town and the point breaks are not one walkable beach strip. Check board carriage before booking buses or transfers.

Build a better surf week

Give yourself several days in one place. Start with a beach walk and local advice, then decide which session suits your ability. Leave time for the surrounding landscape and follow the Tiaki principle of caring for people, place and nature while travelling.

Before you book

Compare the whole trip: flights and board baggage, the final transfer, accommodation, equipment and lessons. Get a written breakdown of what a package includes. Check cancellation terms and ask how the operator handles days when conditions are unsuitable.

Use the local forecast, lifeguard advice and an experienced instructor to make water-safety decisions. Our planning window describes a travel idea, not the conditions you will find on a particular day.
